Stephen D. Fening is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University and Associate Vice President for Research. He also serves as Managing Director of the Case-Coulter Translational Research Partnership and holds appointments at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute and Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. His research focuses on translational research, medical devices, and orthopaedic biomechanics, particularly in sports-related injuries of the knee, shoulder, and head.
Dr. Fening has overseen over $10M in translational research programs and supported 60+ projects. He co-founded Apto Orthopaedics Corporation as Chief Technology Officer, developing non-invasive orthopaedic implant adjustment methods. He has secured $20M+ in grants, authored over 100 publications, and holds multiple patents. His leadership roles include co-directing the I-Corps@NCATS Cleveland site and Case Translational Fellows Program. He previously held directorships at Cleveland Clinic Sports Health, Summa Health System, and the Austen BioInnovation Institute.
Key awards include the 2017 Crain's Cleveland Business Forty Under 40. His research emphasizes commercializing technologies to improve patient care through biomechanical innovation and device development.
