About
Stephen Colclough was a Senior Lecturer at the School of English Literature, Bangor University. He founded the Stephen Colclough Centre for the History and Culture of the Book, dedicated to studying the book as a material artifact and its cultural significance. His research focused on print culture's evolution between 1700-1900, examining reading practices and societal interactions with texts. Though he tragically died in 2015 before the Centre's formal establishment, it continues his vision through international collaborations and academic programs. The Centre promotes postgraduate study, hosts lectures (e.g., Shankland Lectures), and partners with institutions like the National Library of Wales and Ghent University.
Colclough’s legacy includes advancing interdisciplinary research on book history and fostering public engagement through symposia and exhibitions. The Centre’s activities reflect his commitment to exploring the book’s role in knowledge dissemination and cultural identity.
