Stephen Coate is the Kiplinger Professor of Public Policy in the Department of Economics at Cornell University. His research develops theoretical models to analyze public policy issues including welfare programs, public health insurance, campaign finance, and urban economics.
Dr. Coate holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University (1988) and has served as Co-Editor of the Journal of Public Economics. His work combines microeconomic theory with political economy to examine fiscal policy, education reform, and institutional design. Recent publications explore school choice mechanisms, community development financing, and optimal fiscal rules.
His honors include:
