About
Dr. Stephen Bero is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Law, University of Surrey, with a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Southern California and a JD from Columbia Law School. He previously practiced litigation in New York and clerked for U.S. federal court judges.
- Research Fellow, Surrey Centre for Law and Philosophy
- Programme Leader for LLB Programme
His research focuses on private law, criminal law, philosophy of law, and moral philosophy, particularly the role of shame and responsibility in ethical frameworks. His work engages with Bernard Williams' theories, legal moralism, and the interplay between blame and accountability.
Recent publications analyze over-inclusive criminal offenses, shame's social dimensions, and the philosophical foundations of legal responsibility. His collaborative and solo works bridge normative ethics with practical legal theory.
Dr. Bero leads the LLB Programme and previously directed the JD Pathway (Senior Status) Programme, a graduate-entry law track for non-law graduates. Though the JD Pathway is no longer accepting applicants, he remains a liaison for employer inquiries and graduate support.
