About
Stephen Benkovic is the Atherton Professor and Eberly Chair in Chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University's Department of Chemistry within the Eberly College of Science. His research focuses on enzyme catalysis mechanisms, DNA replication processes (notably the T4 replisome), and the dynamic assembly of metabolic complexes like the purinosome. He has pioneered studies on conformational changes in enzymes, multi-enzyme coordination, and the role of metabolons in metabolic flux regulation.
- Education: B.S. Lehigh University (1960), Ph.D. Cornell University (1963), Postdoctoral Research at UCSB (1964-65).
- Research Interests: Enzymology, DNA replication machinery, metabolon dynamics, and applications in biomedicine.
His work has revealed how enzymes like dihydrofolate reductase and T4 DNA polymerases operate through conformational changes and coordinated multi-protein assemblies. Recent studies highlight purinosome assembly under hypoxic conditions and its spatial link to mitochondria, impacting metabolic diseases and cancer.
Benkovic has received over 20 prestigious awards, including the National Medal of Science and Benjamin Franklin Medal. His lab integrates biochemical, biophysical, and genetic approaches to unravel fundamental biological processes with translational implications.
- Awards: National Academy of Sciences Member, American Academy of Arts and Sciences Member, NAI Fellow, and numerous research accolades.
His contributions extend to drug discovery (e.g., benzoxaborole-based antifungals) and foundational insights into replication fork dynamics and translesion synthesis. The Benkovic Research Group fosters interdisciplinary training for future scientists in academia and industry.
