Stephen Allen is an Associate Professor of Music at Rider University’s Department of Media Arts. He holds a D.Phil. from Oxford University and is a leading scholar in Benjamin Britten’s music and popular music studies. His academic work includes pioneering courses like Unpacking Bruce Springsteen, and he co-designed Rider’s unique BA in Popular Music Culture. Allen’s research spans Britten, brass music, and 20th-century composers, with over eight books referencing his Britten scholarship. He has been awarded the AAUP Bertram Mott Award (2014) for advancing higher education.
Education: Oxford University (D.Phil.), Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (B.A. with highest honors), Royal Academy of Music (scholarship). Teaching focuses on music history, brass performance, and pop music analysis. He has taught at Princeton, Rutgers, and Oxford’s Queen’s College.
Research highlights include seminal contributions to The Cambridge Companion to Benjamin Britten and Rethinking Britten. His articles on Holst, Elgar, and Springsteen are widely cited. Allen is also a renowned brass performer and conductor, founding the Princeton Brass Band (2004) and serving as its director until 2020. The band has won national championships and performs globally.
Key achievements include composing Gaudy Flourishes (commissioned by Oxford University), conducting major venues like Sydney Opera House, and leading international brass projects. His digital Brass Band Collection (2023–2025) explores classical composers through modern brass arrangements.
