Stephen A Renshaw

Professor Stephen A Renshaw is the Sir Arthur Hall Professor of Medicine at the University of Sheffield's School of Medicine and Population Health, where he serves as Head of the Division of Clinical Medicine and Deputy Dean of the School. He directs the Bateson Centre, a major cross-faculty research center with over 40 principal investigators and more than £30 million in active grant funding. His career at Sheffield spans since 1998, with significant leadership roles including founding director of an MRC Doctoral Training Partnership across four major universities in Northern England.

Professor Renshaw studied medicine at Cambridge and completed clinical training at Oxford Clinical School, followed by a clinical rotation in Nottingham. His research focuses on neutrophil biology, inflammation resolution, and host-pathogen interactions using zebrafish models. He pioneered the development of transgenic zebrafish models to study immune cell function during infection and inflammation, with applications in antibiotic resistance, cystic fibrosis, and interstitial lung disease.

His most recent publications demonstrate continued innovation in using zebrafish models to investigate inflammatory processes, with particular emphasis on cystic fibrosis immunology, macrophage-neutrophil interactions, and novel therapeutic approaches for infection and inflammatory conditions. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications, particularly in respiratory medicine where he maintains clinical practice with a special interest in Interstitial Lung Disease.
