About
Stephanie Sutton is an Assistant Professor of Photography and Expanded Media at Winthrop University's Department of Fine Arts within the College of Visual and Performing Arts. She holds an MFA from the University of Georgia and a BFA from Georgia State University. Her practice employs self-portraiture and performative photography to interrogate themes of bodily discipline, identity politics, and feminist theory. Sutton has exhibited widely across juried and invitational shows, including solo exhibitions like FOODFACE (2024) and Stephanie Sutton: Music Videos (2018). Her work has been featured in venues such as Mercer University’s McEachern Art Center and the Mint Museum Uptown. Sutton has received residencies at Goodyear Arts and the Hambidge Center, and her teaching roles include leading courses on lens-based performance and image culture. She currently coordinates graduate studies in the Fine Arts department and serves as a collective member at Goodyear Arts.
Her artistic research explores how the fat body disrupts visual norms through performative rituals that merge labor and luxury. Recent presentations include lectures at Kennesaw State University’s Study Abroad program and the Society of Photographic Education conference. Sutton’s awards include the 2023 Winthrop Curriculum Innovation Award and the 2017 Hambidge Fellowship. She maintains active curatorial roles, co-organizing exhibitions like Illuminating Achievement: NASAD Graduate (2024) and Investigative Report (2020).
