Stephanie Stockwell

Stephanie Stockwell is a Professor in the Interdisciplinary Studies and Technology (ISAT) Department at James Madison University (JMU), and Co-Director of the School of Integrated Sciences (SIS). She holds a B.S. in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences (Microbiology) from Dartmouth College. Her research focuses on microbial genetics, host-microbe interactions, synthetic biology, plastic bioremediation, and biomanufacturing. She has led efforts to integrate undergraduate research into curriculum design, notably through jmUDESIGN and citizen science initiatives.

Dr. Stockwell has advised numerous students on projects addressing plastic waste solutions, biotechnology ethics, and microbial symbiosis. Her work includes sponsored projects with Merck & Co. and Integrated Global Services, Inc. She has received prestigious awards such as the JMU Mengebier Professorship (2019–2021) and the CISE Distinguished Teacher Award (2020). Her teaching contributions span biotechnology ethics, lab pedagogy, and strategic curriculum development.
