About
Dr Stephanie M. Volder is a Carlsberg Foundation Visiting Fellow at Linacre College, University of Oxford's Faculty of English Language & Literature. Her research focuses on 18th- and 19th-century literature, with emphasis on colonial writing, the Black Atlantic, slavery narratives, and postcolonial theory. She holds affiliations with both the Faculty of English (St Cross Building, Manor Road) and Linacre College.
Her current project, Entangled Islands: Imagining the End of Slavery in Jamaica through the trope of the Haitian Revolution, 1791-1834, examines transatlantic print culture's Gothic representation of revolutionary events. This work analyzes Jamaica/Haiti comparisons in colonial writings and explores the politics of form in abolitionist discourse.
Teaching areas align with her research interests in Romantic period studies, American literature, and postcolonial/world literatures. She contributes to graduate and undergraduate education within the Faculty's curriculum.
