Stephanie Hunter McMahon serves as the William W. Oliver Chair in Tax Law at Indiana University's Maurer School of Law, where she joined the faculty in 2025. She teaches core courses including Introduction to Income Tax, Business Tax, Advanced Topics in Tax: M&A, and Tax Policy.
Her academic credentials include a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia (2008), J.D. from Harvard Law School (2000), and B.A. from Oglethorpe University (1997).
McMahon's research centers on tax policy frameworks, the administration of tax systems, and intersections between taxation and societal perception, with particular focus on impacts to families and disadvantaged groups. She actively explores legal education methodologies, especially professional skill development in tax curriculum.
Her scholarly awards include:
- Goldman Prize in Teaching (2017, 2018, 2025)
- Schott Award for outstanding scholarly achievement (2022, 2024)
- University Faculty Excellence Award for service (2021)
McMahon authored the third edition of West's Principles in Tax Policy and Developing Professional Skills: Federal Income Tax, with over 40 publications across journals including The Tax Lawyer, Florida Tax Review, Virginia Tax Review, Northwestern Law Review, and Washington Law Review. Prior to academia, she practiced tax law at Cravath, Swaine & Moore and Skadden, Arps in New York City.
