About
Stephan Weiss is a Professor in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, affiliated with the Centre for Signal and Image Processing (CeSIP). He has been a key figure in signal processing research since joining Strathclyde in 1998, previously serving as a Reader (2006–2016), Lecturer, and Senior Lecturer at the University of Southampton (1999–2006), and as a Visiting Lecturer at Strathclyde and a Visiting Scholar at the University of Southern California.
- Professor, University of Strathclyde
- Reader, CeSIP (2006–2016)
- Senior Lecturer, University of Southampton (1999–2006)
- PhD, Signal Processing, University of Strathclyde (1998)
- Dipl.-Ing., Electronic & Electrical Engineering, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (1995)
His research focuses on digital signal processing, particularly adaptive, array, and multirate systems, with a strong emphasis on multi-channel broadband applications. His expertise spans MIMO systems, polynomial matrix decompositions, rural broadband access, and signal processing for communications, audio, acoustics, and biomedical applications. He leads and contributes to major research initiatives in secure and efficient signal processing systems.
The recent publications highlight a consistent trend in broadband signal processing, particularly in angle of arrival estimation, MIMO systems, and robust filtering techniques. These works emphasize polynomial matrix methods, subspace decomposition, and practical implementation challenges in real-world environments, reflecting his deep engagement with both theoretical and applied aspects of signal processing.
His scientific awards include:
- Best Paper Award, MIMO Systems Track (2011)
- Best Student Paper Award (2018)
- Best Paper Award Finalist (2025)
Stephan Weiss has supervised multiple research students and leads significant research grants, including projects such as Signal Processing for Advanced Representations and Analysis of the Ocean Acoustic Environment and EO4SECURITY-MicroDoppler. His industrial collaborations include MathWorks, Texas Instruments, BT, BBC, and Prismtech, particularly through the Centre for White Space Communications, where his work supports rural broadband access and dynamic spectrum management.
He is actively involved in professional service, having served as General Chair for ISPLC 2014, Technical Chair for EUSIPCO 2009, and as part of the organizing committee for ICASSP 2019. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in education and digital inclusion.
