Stephan Haggard is a Research Professor and Lawrence and Sallye Krause Distinguished Professor Emeritus at UC San Diego's School of Global Policy and Strategy, where he serves as Director Emeritus for the Korea-Pacific Program and Research Director for Global Governance at the Institute for Global Conflict and Cooperation.
His research focuses on international relations of the Asia-Pacific region, Korean peninsula security issues, political economy, democratic transitions, and contemporary democratic backsliding. His recent work examines authoritarian regimes, international organizations, and comparative democratization processes.
Professor Haggard has authored influential books including 'Developmental States' (2018), 'Backsliding: Democratic Regress in the Contemporary World' (2021), and co-authored works on North Korea with Marcus Noland. His current work analyzes institutional erosion patterns in democracies globally.
