Stephan F. Miescher is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His work explores the intersections of modernity, environmental change, and gender dynamics in Africa. Notable projects include the Akosombo Dam's socio-economic impact, the ecological history of Volta Lake, and the evolution of masculinities in colonial Ghana. His research employs oral histories and interdisciplinary methodologies.
Recent publications include A Dam for Africa: Akosombo Stories from Ghana (2022), which won the Sidney M. Edelstein Prize, and Making Men in Ghana (2005). He co-edited special issues on energy justice and modernization, and his documentary film Ghana’s Electric Dreams (2019) complements his academic work.
