Sten Mäses

Sten Mäses is a Research Fellow at Tallinn University of Technology's School of Information Technologies, Department of Software Science, currently working part-time (20%). He holds a PhD in Cybersecurity from the same institution (2020). His academic career includes roles as a Junior Research Fellow (2017–2021) and Research Fellow (2021–present).

Education: PhD in Cybersecurity (2020), supervised by Olaf Manuel Maennel, Stefan Sütterlin, and Liina Randmann. Focus: Evaluating cybersecurity competences through simulation exercises.

Research Interests: Cybersecurity education, simulation-based training, cybersecurity exercises, competency mapping, and ethical behavior in cybersecurity. He combines technical cybersecurity with pedagogical approaches, emphasizing practical applications like SOC design, phishing simulations, and open-source intelligence (OSINT).

Projects: Lead or contributed to projects such as the Open Cyber Range (2021–2024), European Cybersecurity Network (2019–2022), and Cyber Hygiene Research (2017–2019). These involve developing frameworks for skill assessment, SOC infrastructure, and cybersecurity education tools.

Advising: Supervised 18 Master's theses on topics like cybersecurity awareness training, forensic traces analysis, and SOC member case studies. Collaborates with institutions like the National Security Research Institute and CybExer Technologies.

Labs/Teams: Active in Tallinn University of Technology's cybersecurity research groups, focusing on simulation-based learning and exercise design.
