Stefan Steiner is a Professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo. He has been a faculty member since 1995 and served as department Chair from 2014 to 2022, and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies previously. He directs the Business and Industrial Statistics Research Group (BISRG), fostering collaboration between academia and industry.
His research focuses on statistical engineering, process improvement, medical outcome monitoring, and measurement systems. Notable contributions include the Statistical Engineering algorithm for variation reduction and risk-adjusted CUSUM charts for surgical outcomes. He has advised numerous organizations like Toyota, Nortel, and government agencies on quality improvement and statistical methodologies.
Steiner has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles and co-wrote Statistical Engineering: An Algorithm for Reducing Variation in Manufacturing Processes. His work has earned awards such as the Wilcoxon Prize and Youden Award. Active in professional societies, he chaired the International Statistical Engineering Association and contributed to standards in statistical quality control.
Education: PhD in Management Science from McMaster University (pre-1995).
