Stefan Mennel

Stefan Mennel holds the position of Lecturer at the Department of Building Services Engineering, Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture (HSLU T&A), where he has been since 2016. He is affiliated with the Institute of Building Technology and Energy (IGE) and pursues research on low-temperature networks, district heating systems, and energy hubs. Previously, he worked as a Project Manager at Todt Gmür + Partner AG, Business Unit Manager at aardeplan AG, and R&D Engineer at ZIG and CCTP.

Education includes a Master's in Renewable Energy Systems (2022, University of Strathclyde), dual engineering degrees (HVAC and Heating/Sanitary Engineering), and studies in history, mathematics, and philosophy at the University of Basel. His teaching focuses on thermodynamics, heat pump technology, and energy systems design.

Research highlights include the LANTERN project (Living Labs for Energy Transition), DeCarbCH (decarbonizing heating/cooling), and SCCER-FEEB&D (Future Energy Efficient Buildings). He holds a patent for a self-acting three-way valve in district heating systems (2018). Active in professional organizations, he chairs SIA 380/1 (heating demand) and participates in multiple SIA commissions on energy efficiency and embodied energy.

Key projects include energy concepts for Herisau, Brig-Glis heating supply, and thermal energy storage analysis. His work emphasizes integrating renewable energy into thermal networks and optimizing system hydraulics for efficiency.
