About
Stefan Andersson-Engels is Professor of Biophotonics at Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, recruited in 2016 to establish the Biophotonics@Tyndall research activity. He leads a multidisciplinary team focused on translating photonics innovations into clinical solutions for patient care.
His educational background includes:
- MSc and PhD in Physics from Lund University
- Postdoctoral fellowship in Canada with Profs Brian Wilson and Michael Patterson
Research centers on clinical translation of biophotonics with emphasis on:
- Surgical guidance systems for precision medicine
- Early detection and diagnostics of malignant tumours
- Monitoring solutions for preterm infants
- Fundamental deep tissue imaging techniques
Scientific recognition includes:
- SKAPA award (Sweden's most prestigious entrepreneurship honor)
- Lindbomska belöningen from the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences for teaching excellence
As an entrepreneur, he co-founded three photonics companies (two publicly traded, one acquired). He served on The Optical Society (OSA) Board of Directors and chaired its Membership and Education Council. Current funding stems from industrial collaborations with Cork's biomedical device sector and Tyndall's strategic national role.
The Biophotonics@Tyndall group maintains global collaborations for clinical translation, supported by Ireland's photonics infrastructure and medical technology cluster. He co-founded and organizes the biennial International Summer School in Biophotonics since 2003.
