Professor Stavros Selemidis is a pharmacologist and head of the Oxidant and Inflammation Biology Group (OXIB) at RMIT University, within the STEM College and School of Health and Biomedical Sciences. He is also the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of ViraLok Therapeutics Pty Ltd, a biotech company he founded. His research focuses on viral disease mechanisms, drug discovery, and translational medicine, targeting respiratory viruses like influenza, common cold, and COVID-19, as well as cancer. He leads an international consortium of researchers and clinicians, with a three-pillar strategy: fundamental biology, pharmacology/drug discovery, and pre-clinical translational biology.
Research interests include antiviral therapies, livestock viral diseases, maternal-fetal complications during viral infections, and cancer metastasis collaboration with institutions like UniSA and Trinity College Dublin. His work has led to over 65 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals (e.g., Nature Communications, Molecular Cancer) and ~$15M in funding. Awards include the 2021 STEM College Research Excellence Award and the 2019 Fukuchi Award.
