Srikanth Ramaswamy

Srikanth Ramaswamy is a Swiss-Indian computational neuroscientist and Research Fellow at Newcastle University, where he leads the Neural Circuits Laboratory. He joined Newcastle in 2021 through the NUAcT fellowship scheme and holds a concurrent Fulbright Visiting Professorship at MIT. His research focuses on the interplay between biological and artificial neural networks, particularly how neuromodulators like dopamine and acetylcholine influence brain oscillations and cognitive functions. He is a founding member of the ALBA network, leading its Global Diversity Task Force, and created the open-access Neocortical Microcircuit Collaboration (NMC) Portal, used by over 70,000 researchers globally.

Dr. Ramaswamy’s academic background includes postdoctoral positions at institutions in Lausanne and Bern, Switzerland, and a Marie Curie Fellowship. His work integrates computational modeling, experimental data, and data science to study the neocortex’s role in learning, attention, and memory. He investigates how calcium dynamics modulate neural networks, with implications for understanding disorders like epilepsy, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease. His long-term goal is to develop therapeutic interventions targeting neural network dysfunctions to address the growing socio-economic burden of age-related brain disorders.
