Spencer Murphy

Spencer Murphy is an Assistant Professor in Media and Communication at Coventry University. His research and teaching focus on cross-cultural analysis, post-colonial theory, and Southeast Asian cinema, with a specialization in film theory and audience studies within the context of media convergence.

• PhD (in progress) in Philosophy, focusing on post-1997 Hong Kong cinema
• Conducted field research in China and Hong Kong, collaborating with Hong Kong City University and industry leaders such as To Kei-Fung
• Founder of the Coventry East Asian Film Society and partner in applied research projects with UK film distributors

Spencer’s publications and productions analyze Korean high school horror films, Hong Kong cinema, and cultural representation in visual media. His work bridges theoretical inquiry with practical engagement in film festivals and media production.

Spencer actively contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate programs, teaching modules on media theory, cultural analysis, and production practices.
