About
Soumyajit Mukherjee is a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. His work spans diverse aspects of structural geology and tectonics, including field-based studies, analogue and analytical modeling, and microstructural analysis across collisional, conservative, and extensional tectonic regimes. He focuses on ductile shear zones, shear sense reversal, and interdisciplinary applications of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics to geological deformation.
- Key editorial roles: Series Editor for Developments in Structural Geology and Tectonics (Elsevier, since 2017), Associate Editor for multiple journals (e.g., Marine and Petroleum Geology since 2023), and Section Editor for Pure and Applied Geophysics.
- Research initiatives include tectonic models for back-structures and out-of-sequence deformations in collisional orogens, with fieldwork conducted in the Himalayas, Deccan Traps, and Mount Abu.
- Active in education via NPTEL lectures on structural geology and stratigraphy, available on YouTube.
Scientific awards include a 2016 Prose Award honorable mention for his edited book Atlas of Structural Geology. Correspondence is limited to email only.
