Sophie Reed

Dr. Sophie Reed is a Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at Swansea University Medical School, specifically within the Blood Sciences/Immunohaematology discipline. She is affiliated with the Institute of Life Science at Singleton Campus and holds a PhD from Cardiff University’s Infection and Immunity division (2022). Her research focuses on immunology, particularly T cell migration in influenza infections and the effects of air pollution during pregnancy (as part of the RESPIRE consortium). She joined Professor Cathy Thornton’s research group as a postdoctoral fellow in 2022 before being appointed as a Medical Pharmacology Lecturer in 2023.

• Immunological mechanisms in pregnancy
• Impact of environmental factors (e.g., air pollution) on maternal and fetal health
• Role of T cells in viral infections
• Pharmacological interventions targeting immune responses

Teaching Roles: She teaches across multiple programs, including the BSc Medical Pharmacology, Microbiology & Immunology, MSc Genomic Medicine, and the Graduate Entry Medicine (MBBCh) course. She supervises undergraduate and postgraduate students in lab-based and data science projects.

Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the Institute of Life Science and collaborates with Prof. Cathy Thornton’s research group. Active in the RESPIRE consortium.
