Sonja Novkovic is a Full Professor in the Department of Economics at the Sobey School of Business, Saint Mary's University. Her research focuses on cooperative economics, labor-managed firms, and social economy dynamics. She holds a Ph.D. from McGill University (1993), an M.A. from the University of Guelph (1988), and a B.A. from the University of Novi Sad (1984).
Her work emphasizes cooperative governance, principles-driven management, and the intersection of cooperatives with global markets. She has authored/co-authored numerous books including *Co-operatives for Sustainable Communities* (2015) and *Co-operative Innovations in China and the West* (2014). Her research explores cooperative viability, network strategies, and the role of cooperative principles in organizational resilience.
Novkovic has served as a keynote speaker at major international conferences, including the International Cooperative Alliance gatherings. Her service roles include chairing the International Co-operative Alliance Committee on Co-operative Research and co-leading the CURA-Managing the Co-operative Difference Research Network (2009–2014). She has also contributed to editorial boards of journals like the *International Journal of Co-operative Management* and *Annals of Public and Co-operative Economics*.
Her recent work critiques microfinance models and examines cooperative strategies in socialist economies like Cuba. She actively bridges academic research with practical tools for measuring cooperative performance and impact.
