Sonia R Sehgal

Sonia R. Sehgal, MD, is a Professor at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine, with joint appointments in the Department of Medicine (Division of General Internal Medicine and Primary Care) and the Department of Family Medicine (Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology). She serves as the Fellowship Director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program and holds the Archstone Foundation Endowed Chair in Geriatrics. Dr. Sehgal is also the Director of the UCI Health SeniorHealth Center and sees patients at UCI Health locations in Orange and Laguna Hills.

Her research and clinical interests are centered on geriatric care, including healthy aging, preventive medicine, hypertension, osteoporosis, and elder abuse. She is deeply committed to medical education and was named a Dean's Scholar in 2021 for her leadership in advancing clinical skills training and assessment for medical students.

The recent publication attributed to her explores community-based, low-touch interventions to improve health literacy and engagement among older adults during the pandemic. The study highlights strategies for disseminating accessible health information and promoting mitigation behaviors, telehealth use, and physical activity in a vulnerable population.

Her scientific recognition includes being named a Physician of Excellence by the Orange County Medical Association annually from 2012 to 2023.

Dr. Sehgal is actively involved in mentoring, program development, and public education. She leads UCI’s expansion of geriatric and gerontology programs and workforce development. She is also a speaker on topics such as dementia, fall prevention, osteoporosis, and travel medicine for older adults.

Her clinical and academic leadership reflects a strong commitment to improving the health and well-being of older adults and their caregivers, in alignment with the mission of the Archstone Foundation.
