Sonia Bardy

Sonia Bardy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), affiliated with the College of Letters & Science. Her research focuses on bacterial cell biology and microbial pathogenesis, particularly in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. She holds a PhD from Queen’s University (2004) and a BSc from the University of Guelph (1999), with postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan.

Her research includes two major projects: 1) Investigating protein spatial organization in bacterial chemotaxis systems, focusing on polar localization mechanisms and their functional implications in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 2) Studying the role of pyomelanin pigment in bacterial virulence, aiming to develop anti-virulence therapies targeting this non-essential factor. Her work bridges molecular mechanisms with clinical applications, emphasizing oxidative stress responses and drug resistance.

Publications highlight advancements in bacterial motility regulation, chemotaxis signaling, and pigment-mediated pathogenesis. Her lab employs interdisciplinary approaches, combining genetics, biochemistry, and environmental microbiology to address fundamental questions in microbial biology.
