Dr. Songyi Yan is a Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Fashion Management at the Manchester Fashion Institute, Manchester Metropolitan University. Her work bridges academic research with industry challenges, focusing on sustainability, circular economy principles, and microfibre pollution in the fashion sector. She has received recognition for her doctoral research on microfibre pollution, winning 3rd place in the 2023 Professor Michael J Baker Doctoral Thesis Awards.
Dr. Yan holds a fashion design undergraduate degree from France and has practical industry experience. Her interdisciplinary collaborations span textile science, computer science, and engineering. She serves as a journal reviewer for Journal of Consumer Behaviour, European Journal of Marketing, and Journal of Marketing Management, and is an Extended Board Member of the Sustainable Fashion Consumption Network.
Her research explores consumer behavior towards sustainable fashion innovations, policy frameworks for microfibre pollution control, and modular garment systems. Recent projects include analyzing Gen Z adoption of upcycled fashion and evaluating corporate communication of sustainable material innovations. She emphasizes collaborative research to address systemic sustainability challenges in the textile industry.
