About
Somantika Datta is a full Professor in the University of Idaho's Department of Mathematics and Statistical Science, where she has been since 2010 (Assistant Professor 2010-2016, Associate Professor 2016-2023, full Professor since 2023). She previously held postdoctoral positions at Princeton University (2009-2010) and Arizona State University (2007-2009).
Education:
- Ph.D. in Mathematics from University of Maryland, College Park (2007)
Her research focuses on applied harmonic analysis with specializations in frame theory and signal processing. Key areas include:
- Finite/infinite frame theory
- Equiangular/low coherence frame design
- Wavelet construction using Zernike polynomials
- Stochastic frame applications
- Deterministic compressed sensing
- Welch bound generalizations
Recent publications highlight trends in frame theory for signal processing and Zernike polynomial applications in PDEs. She has led multiple funded projects including:
- NSF grant CCF 1422252 (2014-2018)
- Simons Foundation grant (2020-2025)
- AFOSR Grant FA9550-10-1-0441 (2010-2013)
Editorial roles:
- Associate Editor for Kyungpook Mathematical Journal (2022-present)
Teaching includes graduate courses like Math5390 (Theory of Ordinary Differential Equations) and Math5710 (Functional Analysis I) for Fall 2025.
