About
Sofia-Katerina Kufner is a seismologist and tectonic researcher at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg's GeoCenter Northern Bavaria, where she leads research on collision-subduction transition dynamics in Myanmar-Yunnan since 2024. Previously, she held positions at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (2022-2024), British Antarctic Survey (2019-2022), and GFZ Potsdam (2016-2019).
Research Focus: Integrating seismological data with geophysical and geological analysis to understand Earth's evolution across scales—from tectonic deformation in Central Asian collision zones to glacial microseismicity in Antarctica. Her work leverages field data acquisition, network design, and multi-disciplinary modeling.
- 2016: PhD in Geosciences, Free University Berlin / GFZ Potsdam
- 2012: Master in Geophysics, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
Scientific Contributions: Key publications address lithospheric indentation in Central Asia, Kaikoura earthquake rupture complexity, DAS-based microseismic studies in Antarctica, and Pamir-Tajik basin interactions. Her work spans collisional tectonics, ice stream dynamics, and geohazard assessment.
