Smita Pakhale

Dr. Smita Pakhale is a Full Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and a Senior Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. She serves as a staff respirologist at The Ottawa Hospital and holds a cross-appointment at the School of Epidemiology and Public Health. Dr. Pakhale co-founded and leads The Bridge Engagement Centre, a research hub specializing in community-based participatory action research (CBPAR) since 2014, focusing on health equity for marginalized populations.

Her educational background includes:

• Master of Science in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from McGill University (2008)
• Post-doctoral fellowship in Respiratory Epidemiology and Clinical Research from McGill University (2008)
• Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) in Internal Medicine from Government Medical College (1992)
• MD - MBBS (Medical graduation) from Government Medical College (1989)

Dr. Pakhale's research addresses health inequities through community-engaged approaches, with emphases on respiratory diseases, substance use disorders, homelessness, sickle cell disease, and mental health. She developed The Bridge Model™, an integrated healthcare framework for marginalized communities that combines clinical care with social support systems.

Her recent publications explore respiratory health disparities, clinical interventions for chronic diseases, and healthcare delivery innovations. Work consistently highlights interdisciplinary approaches to reducing health inequities and improving care models for vulnerable populations.

She directs The Bridge Engagement Centre, fostering collaborations between healthcare professionals, community peer researchers, policymakers, and marginalized populations to co-develop sustainable healthcare solutions.
