Slava Jankin

Slava Jankin is a Professor of Data Science and Government at the University of Birmingham, holding dual affiliations in the School of Government and School of Computer Science. He serves as the Turing Academic Lead, coordinating research with the Alan Turing Institute, and is Deputy Director of the Institute for Data and AI (IDAI) and Founding Director of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Government (CAIG). His expertise spans computational governance, AI-driven public policy, and environmental health analytics.

Education: PhD in Political Science (Trinity College Dublin, 2009), Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics (Trinity College Dublin, 2006), BSc Econ (Belarus State Economic University, 2002).

Research focuses on three interconnected domains: (1) AI-powered digital twins for governance system simulation, (2) computational approaches to climate change and health (via Lancet Countdown and CATALYSE initiatives), and (3) information resilience in diverse societies through neuro-studies and agent-based modeling. His work bridges methodological innovation with practical policy applications.

He advises the UN and European Commission on AI strategies and previously founded the Hertie School’s Data Science Lab. Notable contributions include establishing MSc programs in AI & Government and AI & Sustainable Development at Birmingham.

Grants and advising: Active in UN/EU policy circles, with extensive collaborative research on AI adoption challenges in public sectors. Leadership roles in global initiatives like the Lancet Countdown demonstrate his commitment to interdisciplinary impact.
