Skye Augustine (Hwsyun’yun) is a doctoral candidate at Simon Fraser University’s School of Resource & Environmental Management and serves as Clam Garden Project Coordinator for Parks Canada in Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. She bridges Indigenous knowledge systems with scientific research through collaborative projects like the five-year clam garden restoration initiative involving Coastal First Nations. As Adjunct Faculty at Northwest Indian College, she mentors undergraduate marine science students at the Salish Sea Research Center. Her work emphasizes eco-cultural revival, traditional practices, and intertidal ecosystem stewardship.
Education includes a BSc and MSc in Geography from the University of Victoria. Research focuses on clam garden technologies, kelp carbon dynamics, and the integration of place-based values in ecological restoration. She contributes to the Coastal Marine Ecology and Conservation Lab and the Xwe’etay/Lasqueti Archaeology Project, exploring ancient mariculture and cultural heritage preservation.
Her publications highlight boundary-spanning collaborations between Indigenous communities and scientists, as well as the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems. Current projects emphasize enduring partnerships for resilient coastal ecosystems and the documentation of ancestral ecological knowledge for future applications.
