Siva Umapathy

Prof. Siva Umapathy serves as Professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, holding dual appointments in the Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry and Department of Instrumentation and Applied Physics. He additionally holds the position of Special Professor at the University of Nottingham, UK, and is recognized as a JC Bose Fellow by the Government of India.

His research program centers on understanding molecular structure and dynamics through vibrational spectroscopic techniques, with particular emphasis on Raman and Infrared spectroscopy applications in complex biological systems. The Laser Spectroscopy Group under his leadership investigates structural uniqueness in entities ranging from bacteria to cancer cells and tissues, exploring the fundamental vibrational nature of molecular systems. This work bridges physics, chemistry, and biomedical research with direct implications for disease diagnostics.

Prof. Umapathy has established significant recognition through the JC Bose Fellowship, a prestigious award supporting outstanding scientists in India. His group maintains active international collaborations, evidenced by student placements such as Dr. Venkatraman's Newton International Fellowship at the University of Bristol.

Mentorship forms a core component of his academic role, with documented success in guiding doctoral researchers to independent careers, including Dr. Goutam Kumar Chandra's appointment as Assistant Professor at NIT Calicut. The research group maintains high visibility through participation in major conferences including the 90 Years of Raman Conference (2017-2018) and FlouRA Conference at IISER Pune (2014), while also engaging in institutional activities ranging from ministerial visits to campus celebrations.
