Sinem Serin is an Assistant Professor at Istanbul University's Faculty of Literature, Department of History, specializing in the History of Ottoman Institutions and Civilization. Her academic journey includes a PhD (2020) and MA (2009) from Istanbul University's Institute of Social Sciences, along with dual undergraduate degrees in Sociology and History.
Her research focuses on Ottoman institutional frameworks, particularly:
- Healthcare governance and the Hekimbaşılık (Chief Physicians) system
- Industrial production in imperial manufactories like Yıldız Porcelain
- Socioeconomic structures through guilds and charitable foundations
- Palace administration and material culture
Publications predominantly analyze 19th-century Ottoman institutions through monographs like Osmanlı Sağlık Sisteminin Yönetimi: Hekimbaşılık Kurumu (2021) and articles examining porcelain factories, palace towers, and archival studies. Her works frequently employ Ottoman archival documents to reconstruct administrative practices.
Currently advises four postgraduate students researching Ottoman medical manuscripts, healthcare management in religious complexes, and artisan communities under Sultans Mahmud II and Abdülmecid. Leads the project 'Ottoman Archive Documents in Sarıyer' (2021-2023) and serves as editorial board member for Tarih Dergisi since 2009.
