About
Sinan Keten is the Jerome B. Cohen Professor of Engineering at Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering, holding joint appointments in Mechanical Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering, with a courtesy appointment in Biomedical Engineering. He serves as Associate Chair of Mechanical Engineering. His research focuses on computational materials science, emphasizing nanostructured polymers and bioinspired materials. Key areas include multiscale simulation, machine learning, and biomolecular design.
Education: PhD and MEng from MIT (Cambridge, MA), BS from Bogazici University (Istanbul, Turkey). His work bridges theoretical and applied mechanics, with contributions to epoxy resins, polymer nanocomposites, and protein-based materials. He has received prestigious awards, including the PECASE (2017) and ONR YIP (2015).
Research highlights include developing synthetic catch bonds for self-strengthening materials and designing bioinspired nanocomposites with enhanced toughness. His group also explores protein sequence modeling via deep learning and magnetic self-assembly for 2D networks. Professional service includes editorial roles at npj Computational Materials and ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering.
