About
Dr. Sina Saffaran is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the School of Engineering, University of Warwick, and a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow. His research focuses on developing high-fidelity computational simulations for mechanistic modeling of the cardiopulmonary system, digital twins for personalized critical care, and AI-driven approaches to optimize mechanical ventilation for critically ill patients. He holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Warwick (2020) and has held research roles at UCL's CHIMERA centre and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Key research interests include:
- Systems medicine and translational computational physiology
- Personalized simulation and control technologies for critical care
- Noninvasive and invasive mechanical ventilation optimization
- AI integration in clinical decision-making
Recent work emphasizes predictive modeling of ARDS, ventilator parameter optimization, and bias reduction in ICU datasets through computational simulations. His Royal Academy fellowship (2022) supports automated, individualized mechanical ventilation strategies.
Awards include the 2020 Warwick Science Faculty Thesis Prize and Royal Academy Engineering Fellowship. His team includes 6 PhD students and collaborates with institutions like University of Nottingham, National University of Ireland Galway, and University Hospital of Modena. He teaches advanced control systems, biomedical engineering, and nonlinear control at Warwick.
Research infrastructure includes high-performance computing platforms for parallelized optimization algorithms and collaboration with clinical partners in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine.
