Northeastern UniversityAbout
Sina Fazelpour is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Computer Science at Northeastern University's College of Social Sciences and Humanities. His research bridges ethics, epistemology, and technology, focusing on issues of justice, diversity, and reliability in AI systems and social networks. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of British Columbia, an M.Sc. in Medical Biophysics, and a B.Eng. in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering.
Before joining Northeastern, he was a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Philosophy and Machine Learning Department. His work employs tools from cognitive science, agent-based simulation, and machine learning to address challenges in algorithmic fairness and epistemic justice. Key contributions include analyses of AI alignment, misinformation detection, and the societal impacts of algorithmic systems.
Research interests include the ethical implications of AI design, the role of diversity in group inquiry, and the dynamics of homophily in social networks. He explores how technical systems can perpetuate or mitigate injustice and how formal methods can improve societal outcomes. Awards include recognition from the World Economic Forum and SSHRC funding for postdoctoral research.
Publications span journals like Philosophy of Science, Synthese, and Cognition, with recent focus on algorithmic transparency, LLM limitations, and epistemic communities. His interdisciplinary approach addresses both theoretical and applied dimensions of technology's societal impact.
