Simon W. Jones

Dr. Simon W. Jones serves as the Associate Department Head of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Professor at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. His expertise lies in vibrations and computational mechanics, with research focusing on traffic-induced ground vibrations, finite element modeling of composites, and Wavelet-Galerkin methods in structural dynamics. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (2007-2010), an MS from the University of Alberta (2003-2005), and a BS from the University of Alberta (1998-2003). Prior to academia, he worked as a research engineer at C-FER Technologies and a mechanical design engineer at General Dynamics Canada.

His research explores topics such as rattleback dynamics, turbine blade contact modeling, and soil-structure interaction. He actively advises student projects in mechanical vibrations and numerical methods. Teaching interests include finite element analysis, solid mechanics, and computer programming. Beyond academia, Dr. Jones enjoys shotgun sports, woodworking, and mountain biking, and has advised collegiate lacrosse and rifle teams.
