Simon Sandall

Dr Simon Sandall is a Senior Lecturer in Early Modern British History at the University of Winchester's History Department. He joined in 2012 after positions at the University of East Anglia and the University of Leicester's Centre for English Local History. His research focuses on custom, law, community dynamics, and popular protest in Early Modern England, particularly in the Forest of Dean. He holds a PhD from UEA (2009) as part of an AHRC-funded project on popular memory.

His research interests include pre-industrial popular politics, the English Civil Wars, gender and church courts, and local history methodologies. He co-convenes the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Research and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Publications include a 2013 monograph on the Forest of Dean and a 2021 co-edited volume on European neighborliness. His work analyzes court records, social conflict, and memory's role in shaping community identity.

As Director of Studies, he supervises research students in Early Modern English history, focusing on rebellion, social change, and local history approaches. His interdisciplinary approach bridges legal, social, and environmental history.
