Simon Kasasa

Simon Kasasa serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics at Makerere University School of Public Health, College of Health Sciences, where he also acts as Field Coordinator for the Masters of Public Health (Distance Education) program. He contributes to institutional governance through membership on the School of Public Health's higher degrees, Research and Ethics Committee (HDREC) and the Makerere University Lung Institute board.

Education:

• PhD in Epidemiology from Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, University of Basel
• Master of Science in Epidemiology/Biostatistics from Case Western Reserve University
• Bachelor's degree in Statistics from Makerere University

Research Profile: Dr. Kasasa specializes in infectious disease epidemiology with methodological expertise in Bayesian modeling and disease mapping. His primary research domains include HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis, and Pneumonia, with current fieldwork focused on Uganda's national TB prevalence survey and spatial mapping of HIV high-risk locations through the PLACE Team. His doctoral research analyzed mortality-malaria transmission relationships using Health and Demographic Surveillance data from West and Southern Africa.

Academic Contributions: He teaches core public health disciplines including research methods, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Monitoring & Evaluation. As Field Coordinator for the MPH Distance Education program, he directly expands Uganda's public health workforce capacity. His institutional roles encompass research ethics oversight through HDREC and strategic direction at the Makerere University Lung Institute.

Operational Teams: Dr. Kasasa actively participates in national disease surveillance initiatives, notably the ongoing TB prevalence survey and PLACE project for HIV hotspot identification, demonstrating applied epidemiology in Uganda's public health response systems.
