Simon Aeppli

Simon Aeppli is a Senior Lecturer in Directing (Factual) at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), Farnham campus, teaching part-time since joining the Film Production team in 2009. He concurrently pursues a part-time PhD at the University of Brighton focused on Northern Ireland's historical landscapes.

His research excavates marginal histories through folk horror and haunting theories, using Northern Ireland's rural terrain—particularly his hometown of Eden—as sites of memory investigation. This manifests in subjective documentary forms blending desktop documentary, video essays, and archival research to confront buried narratives from the Troubles era.

Key recognitions include:

• British Association for Irish Studies bursary (2024) for his PhD project
• AHRC Techne scholarship (2019) supporting doctoral research
• Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (2011)

Award-winning filmmaker funded by Film London and Arts Council England, Aeppli co-produced the knowledge exchange project 'F for Farnham'—audio ghost walks developed with Farnham Town Council and Farnham Castle Trust—demonstrating applied research in local supernatural heritage.
