Dr. Silvia Roca-Martinez is an Associate Professor of Spanish at The Citadel, specializing in Latin American Literature and Gender Studies with a focus on Cuba. She holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Literatures from Indiana University, Bloomington, and additional degrees in TESL, Spanish Literature, and English Literature. Her research explores Afro-Cuban religions in contemporary Cuban cultural works and their intersection with race, gender, and national identity beyond the Revolution's narrative. She has also published on autobiographical writings by women intellectuals in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula.
Dr. Roca-Martinez has led study-abroad programs to Cuba, Peru, and Spain, and currently co-directs/co-edits El Cid Journal. She advises the Sigma Delta Pi and Spanish Club and coordinates the Spanish section. Beyond academia, she teaches yoga to faculty and staff on campus.
