Silvia Arroyo is a Lecturer in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland, since January 2020. Previously, she served as Associate Professor (2018–2019) and Assistant Professor (2012–2018) at Mississippi State University, USA, and a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Colorado Boulder (2011–2012). Her academic focus is on Spanish Golden Age literature and science, with expertise in early modern medicine, scientific allegories, Baroque theatre, and gender studies.
Arroyo holds a PhD in Spanish Literature from the University of Colorado Boulder (2011), an MA from the same institution (2005), and a BA in English Philology from the University of Granada, Spain (1998). Her research explores intersections between literature and science, particularly in works by Cervantes, Ana Caro, and Oliva Sabuco, alongside themes of monstrosity, sensory perception, and gender representation.
She is the organizer of the UCC Spanish Golden Age Symposium, a biannual academic conference, and coordinates the BCOMM HS programme, managing student affairs and international exchanges. Her teaching includes courses on Golden Age culture, gender studies, and the body in literature. She has published extensively, including edited volumes like The Eye in Spanish Golden Age Medicine, Anatomy, and Literature (2023) and peer-reviewed articles analyzing medical rhetoric, astronomical symbolism, and literary subversion in early modern texts.
