Silke Trommer is a Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Manchester, serving as Director of the Manchester Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence and PGR Director for Politics. Her academic journey includes prior positions at the University of Helsinki (2014–2016) and Murdoch University (2012–2013). She holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of Helsinki (2012), recognized with three international dissertation awards.
Her research focuses on global trade governance, gender mainstreaming in trade policy, and the intersection of feminist political economy with development and social movements. Key projects include a SSHRC Insight Grant on gender mainstreaming in global trade governance and collaborative work on Canada-UK trade relationships. She also explores participatory trade politics, notably through her monograph Transformations in Trade Politics: Participatory Trade Politics in West Africa (Routledge 2014).
Her articles and chapters reflect expertise in global trade institutions (WTO, EU-UK dynamics), feminist critiques of trade orthodoxy, and post-crisis protest politics. She actively contributes to scholarly discourse through editorial roles at Globalizations and Contemporary Politics, and advises policymakers and civil society on trade equity issues.
Dr. Trommer has been recognized with prestigious awards for her doctoral work and has engaged in over 100 academic activities, including consultancy for trade policy roundtables and media commentary on BBC World Service and BBC Radio Manchester.
