Silas Munro is a Professor and Faculty Co-Chair of the MFA Program in Graphic Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts (VCFA). He holds an MFA from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Munro is founder of Poly-Mode, an LGBTQ+ and Minority-owned design studio collaborating with cultural institutions like MoMA, MoCA, and the Walker Art Center. His research explores post-colonial dynamics between design and marginalized communities, typography, and inclusive pedagogy.
His work includes Strikethrough: Typographic Messages of Protest (2022), contributions to W.E.B. Du Bois’s Data Portraits, and co-authoring Black Design in America. He teaches at leading institutions including Yale School of Art and CalArts, emphasizing image-making, typographic systems, and ecological design.
