Shirley Velasquez-Hoque is Senior Lecturer in Business and Management at Oxford Brookes Business School, Oxford Brookes University. She holds a PhD, MSc, PGCTHE, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Her research examines migration, development, and gender relations, with emphasis on economic remittance systems.
Using qualitative methodologies, she investigates how remittances shape family dynamics, gendered power structures, and entrepreneurial activities within transnational communities. Current projects analyze remittance management practices among UK-based migrant workers and their families in countries of origin.
Her published work explores agency and decision-making in remittance flows, particularly among Ecuadorian women migrants. Research has been presented at international conferences including The Migration Conference and featured in migration studies journals.
