About
Sheng Wang is a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES) and a Research Scientist at the Agroecosystem Sustainability Center (ASC) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He leads the airborne sensing research team at ASC in collaboration with Dr. Kaiyu Guan. Dr. Wang holds a PhD from the Technical University of Denmark and has been at UIUC since February 2019. His research focuses on developing cross-scale sensing technologies integrating remote sensing, machine learning, and process-based models to quantify crop traits, soil properties, and farming practices.
His work aims to advance understanding of ecohydrological processes in agroecosystems and provide actionable data for sustainable management. Key areas include precision agriculture, environmental sustainability, and ecohydrology. Dr. Wang has published over 30 papers in top journals and secured federal, state, and university grants as PI or Co-PI.
His mission emphasizes leveraging airborne, satellite, and ground-based sensing to improve food security and environmental sustainability. Current projects involve crop residue cover detection, soil carbon quantification, and nitrogen management optimization using machine learning and remote sensing.
