Sheldon Miller

Sheldon Miller serves as Professor of Vocal Coaching at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester, where he has been a full-time member of the music staff in the School of Vocal Studies and Opera since 2018.

Professor Miller maintains an extensive international career as a vocal coach and répétiteur, having worked with major opera companies across North America including Washington National Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, San Diego Opera, Dallas Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and many others. His repertoire spans from classical works like Die Zauberflöte and Le nozze di Figaro to contemporary operas including Three Decembers, Silent Night, and As One.

His research and performance interests focus on vocal coaching techniques, operatic repertoire development, and collaborative piano practices within the opera tradition. Miller has worked with renowned international artists such as Frederica von Stade, Christine Brewer, Denyce Graves, Erin Morley, and Mariusz Kwiecień, bringing this professional experience directly into his teaching practice.

As a collaborative pianist, Miller has been broadcast extensively across the USA and performed in world-renowned concert halls. His expertise spans both historical and contemporary opera, with notable work on productions ranging from Baroque operas like The Fairy Queen to 21st century works like The Invention of Morel.

Professor Miller possesses significant experience coaching young singers through various Young Artists Programs in the USA and Europe, which informs his pedagogical approach at RNCM. His professional background bridges the academic and professional opera worlds, providing students with practical insights into the opera industry.
