Sheila Contreras is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Michigan State University and a Core Faculty member affiliated with the Chicano/Latino Studies Program. She previously served as the program’s director for seven years, overseeing both the PhD program and undergraduate specialization.
Her research and teaching focus on Chicana/o and U.S. Latina/o literature, multi-ethnic literatures, and comparative indigeneities within the Americas. She also engages with women's studies and literary intersections of cultural politics.
Contreras is the author of Blood Lines: Myth, Indigenism and Chicana/o Literature (University of Texas Press), which explores indigenous themes in Chicano cultural politics through literary texts. Her current project, Mestizaje/Métissage: Post-Conquest Literary Cultures in the Americas, continues her analysis of hybrid identities and postcolonial narratives.
