Dr. Shegufta Shetranjiwalla serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Memorial University of Newfoundland's School of Science and the Environment, leading research in sustainable materials innovation and green chemistry methodologies.
She earned an Integrated MSc-PhD in Environmental and Life Sciences (Biomaterials) from Trent University, establishing her expertise in renewable resource utilization and polymer science.
Her research spans Green Chemistry, Circular Economy principles, Sustainable Materials development, Biopolymer engineering, Life Cycle Assessment, Polymer Science, and Nanocomposites. At the Shetranjiwalla Laboratory for Eco-design, Green Chemistry And Circular Innovation (LEGACI), she pioneers waste upcycling techniques for marine and commodity polymers while developing organosilicon hybrid materials with rigorous environmental impact quantification through green chemistry metrics and LCA.
Dr. Shetranjiwalla directs multiple high-impact research initiatives funded by Natural Resources Canada, NSERC, Schlumberger, American Chemical Society, and the Ocean Frontier Institute, directly addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals 11, 12, 13, 14, 9, and 3 through circular design and eco-innovation.
She has mentored 5 undergraduate honours students, 4 master's candidates, 4 PhD candidates, and 2 post-doctoral fellows while integrating industrial partners like Graphene Innovation Technologies into her transdisciplinary approach that spans North America, Europe, and Asia.
Her professional affiliations include the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute, Canadian Society of Chemistry Green Chemistry Division, and American Center for Life Cycle Assessment where she co-chairs the SETAC/ACLCA Circularity Working Group.
